At approximately eight years old, she watched a cheerleading team practicing and realized that competitive cheerleading was much more athletic and challenging than she had previously imagined. She decided to try it and eventually left gymnastics to concentrate on cheerleading.
From that point forward, cheerleading became a major part of her life.
Butler was homeschooled through junior high and high school, allowing her to devote significant time to training and competitions. She competed with All-Star teams in both Florida and California and earned multiple national and world-level titles.
Her early experience also helped her develop a presence online. At about age 12, she began making instructional cheerleading videos on YouTube, giving viewers a glimpse into the training and techniques involved in competitive cheer.
Gabi Butler’s Cheerleading Career
Gabi Butler’s cheerleading career began long before she became famous on Netflix.
She competed for elite All-Star programs and developed a reputation for her flexibility, tumbling, athleticism, and performance ability. Her role as a flyer became one of the most recognizable parts of her cheerleading style.
A flyer is the athlete who is lifted or thrown during stunts, requiring exceptional balance, body control, flexibility, and trust in teammates.
Butler’s years of training eventually led her to some of the most competitive cheerleading programs in the United States.
Gabi Butler’s All-Star Cheerleading Years
Before college, Butler competed with major All-Star teams in Florida and California. Weber State’s official profile notes that she won several national and world cheerleading titles during this period.
Her early online videos also helped establish her as a recognizable name within the cheerleading community.
Rather than becoming famous overnight, Butler gradually built an audience through a combination of competitive success, social media, and television appearances.
Gabi Butler at Navarro College
In 2019, Gabi Butler was recruited to Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas, a school known internationally for its highly successful cheerleading program.
Joining Navarro represented a major step in her competitive career.
Navarro’s cheer program had already achieved considerable success before Butler arrived. The team competed at the NCA Collegiate National Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, where national titles were at stake.
Butler became part of the team during the period covered by the first season of Cheer. Her athletic ability and social media following made her one of the most recognizable members of the squad.
She returned to Navarro for the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons, with the second season of Cheer following the team through the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its rivalry with Trinity Valley Community College.
Gabi Butler and Netflix’s Cheer
The biggest turning point in Gabi Butler’s public career came with Netflix’s docuseries Cheer.
The six-part first season premiered in January 2020 and followed Navarro College’s cheerleaders as they prepared for the national championship. The series showed the physical demands, injuries, pressure, relationships, and emotional challenges involved in elite competitive cheerleading.
Butler was one of the central personalities featured in the series.
Her presence on the show helped introduce millions of viewers to the athletic side of competitive cheerleading. Rather than simply presenting cheer as sideline entertainment, Cheer showed the strength, conditioning, flexibility, tumbling, stunting, and mental preparation required at the highest level.
How Cheer Changed Gabi Butler’s Career
Before Cheer, Butler already had a substantial online following and competitive reputation.
After the series became a major Netflix success, however, her public profile grew dramatically. Netflix described the Navarro athletes as becoming “cheerlebrities,” with cast members gaining large social-media audiences and making television appearances.
Weber State also noted that Butler’s social media presence expanded significantly following the series.
The show therefore did more than introduce Butler to television audiences—it helped turn her into a broader entertainment and digital-media personality.
Gabi Butler in Cheer Season 2
Butler returned for the second season of Cheer.
Season 2 expanded the story beyond Navarro and introduced the rivalry between Navarro College and Trinity Valley Community College. The season also dealt with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on collegiate cheerleading.
For Butler, the second season represented another stage of her Navarro journey.
Her career path was also changing. The pandemic provided some college athletes with additional eligibility, allowing Butler to continue competing beyond the period she had originally expected. She eventually used that opportunity to continue her collegiate cheerleading career at Weber State University.

Her athletic background made her a natural fit for the physically demanding competition.
Butler performed strongly in several challenges but was eliminated after the show’s elimination wheel landed on her name. Netflix reported that she was surprised by the outcome, particularly because she had performed well and had received no votes from her teammates.
